Cutting stickers from foil with plotter

In the promotion for March 2023, each Silhouette Cameo 4 plotter comes with a set of self-adhesive films. This is a great opportunity to try out this duo! Self-adhesive foils are an extremely versatile medium available in a wide range of colors and sizes to fit virtually any cutting plotter model.

Thanks to the backing, it is possible to cut without the use of a mat, or even straight from the roll, which not only gives you convenience in use, but also allows you to create designs in larger sizes, or cut multiple designs at once. And what can be cut from self-adhesive film? For example, original stickers for the walls of a child's room, decorative ornaments for key rings or thermos or a decorative inscription for a jar.

Self-adhesive films give us a lot of possibilities not only thanks to their varied colors, including matte, glitter or metallic finishes.

Their thin structure allows us to cut out small details. Thanks to this, even the most fancy fonts can be cut into them and elegant lettering can be created!

Speaking of subtitles, you can easily create them using the software included with the plotters. Just choose one of the fonts available on your computer. In Silhouette Studio we can also draw additional elements, for example, coffee beans.
You can download the design I designed for free in Studio format.

I cut my design in silver foil from a promotional kit. I can cut the foil without using a mat, so I load it by adjusting the roll spacing to its width in advance. The cutting settings for the Cameo 4 plotter are on the included label. I also use them. Cutting settings may vary slightly depending on the level of blade wear and other factors. If the cut does not meet expectations, it is worth gently modifying the settings, such as increasing the strength by a few points or adding a second pass.

You can put the inscription cut out in this way on the coffee jar, so that the storage container will also become a kitchen decoration and gain a unique character.

It is best to transfer the cut out design to the target surface using transfer film. This will allow you to conveniently and without the risk of shifting and damaging the design to stick it, in this case to the glass surface of the jar.

After transferring the inscription to the target surface, the jar looks very elegant. However, it should be remembered that dishes decorated in this way are not suitable for washing in the dishwasher! Under the influence of high temperatures and detergents, the film could simply peel off from the glass surface.

Cutting in self-adhesive film gives a lot of scope for decorative elements on various types of surfaces. A wide range of color variants and finishes - from matte, to smooth and metallic - make it possible to achieve great effects. Foils can be applied in layers to create more complex patterns. With permanent films, it is possible to cut lettering or other shapes for outdoor use, such as for storefronts. I hope this article will be helpful for beginners in foil cutting, and inspire those more advanced to create!
