How to Apply Flex Vinyl – Step by Step

What you will need:

• Silhouette Flex Vinyl (in your preferred color and finish),
• a cutting machine (e.g., Silhouette Cameo),
• a heat press or iron (preferably with adjustable temperature settings),
• the fabric item you want to decorate (e.g., a cotton T-shirt).

Step 1: Create Your Design

Design your artwork in your cutting machine software. Remember to mirror the design before cutting, as it will be applied in reverse.

Step 2: Set Up the Cutter and Cut the Design

Place the vinyl on the cutting mat with the shiny carrier side facing down. Select the appropriate cutting settings – flex vinyl typically requires low blade depth and cutting force (depending on your cutter model and vinyl thickness). Then cut the design.

Step 3: Weed the Excess Vinyl

Remove the unwanted vinyl using a weeding hook or tool. Only the intended design should remain on the transparent carrier sheet.

Step 4: Prepare the Fabric

Lay the fabric flat and lightly iron it to remove wrinkles and moisture. Make sure the surface is clean and dry.

Step 5: Position the Design

Place the design on the fabric with the carrier sheet facing upward (shiny side on top).

Step 6: Heat Press the Design

Apply a heat press or hot iron (without steam). Temperature, pressing time, and pressure should be adjusted according to the vinyl manufacturer's recommendations.

Step 7: Remove the Carrier Sheet

Wait a few seconds and carefully peel away the carrier sheet – your design is ready!

It is not recommended to use flex vinyl on highly stretchable, silk, or very thin fabrics without performing a test first.
