How to make an iron-on transfer from flex foil – step by step

What you will need:

• Silhouette heat transfer foil (in your chosen colour and finish),
• cutting plotter
• a heat press or iron (preferably with a temperature setting function),
• material to be ironed on (e.g. a cotton T-shirt),

Step 1: Design a pattern

Create your design in your plotter program. Remember to flip the graphic in a mirror image, because it will be applied backwards.

Step 2: Set up the plotter and cut

Place the foil on the cutting mat with the shiny side (backing) facing down.Set the appropriate cutting parameters – for flex foils these are usually low settings for blade force and depth (depending on the plotter model and foil thickness).Then cut out the design.

Step 3: Removing unnecessary foil elements

Remove excess foil with a hook. Only the pattern should remain on the transparent foil (backing).

Step 4: Preparing the fabric

Lay the fabric out on a flat surface and gently iron it to remove creases and moisture. Make sure the surface is clean and dry.

Step 5: Applying the foil to the fabric

Place the pattern with the backing side up (i.e. the shiny foil on top) in the selected location.

Step 6: Ironing

Apply a hot heat press or iron (without steam). Temperature, time and pressure should be selected according to the film manufacturer's recommendations.
