Why is it worth cutting out decorations from paper?
Paper is a material with huge potential – it is cheap, available in many variants, easy to process and visually impressive. Paper decorations work great on:
weddings (invitations, place cards, cake toppers),
birthdays (garlands, 3D decorations, greeting cards),
holidays (Christmas tree decorations, Easter pendants, handmade cards),
baby shower or christening,
corporate events (stands, signs, decorative branding).
The cutting plotter allows you to make even the most complicated designs with precision impossible to achieve manually. What's more, these devices allow you to create decorations in a short time, which is invaluable in paid work or when organizing large events.
What possibilities do cutting plotters offer?
The cutting plotters available in our offer are versatile devices that will work well both in a home workshop and in a professional craftsman's studio. Thanks to them, you can:
Cut out precise patterns – from simple shapes to delicate details.
Create layered and 3D designs – pop-up cards, boxes, spatial decorations.
Cut out inscriptions and letters – perfect for personalizing invitations or wall decorations.
Create stencils and masks – e.g. for painting, screen printing or mixed techniques.
Additionally, plotters work with various graphics programs, which provides almost unlimited design possibilities.
Which paper should I choose for cutting?
The key to successful projects is not only the right plotter, but also the right paper. Here are the most important things to consider:
Types of paper:
Decorative paper - colored, glitter, metallic - ideal for occasional decorations.
Craft paper - great for rustic, vintage, eco style.
Self-adhesive paper - makes it easy to create stickers and stick-on elements.
Paper weight:
120–160 g/m² – thin paper, easy to cut, ideal for background layers, smaller elements.
160–250 g/m² – universal decorative paper, most commonly used.
250–300 g/m² – stiffer paper for 3D cards, toppers, spatial elements.
>300 g/m² – used less frequently, mainly for very durable decorations. Not every plotter can handle this thickness – it is worth checking the device specification. In the case of hobby plotters, manufacturers most often declare the ability to cut paper with a weight of up to about 300g.
Where to get cutting patterns?
Thanks to the popularity of cutting plotters, access to ready-made patterns has never been easier. They can be found in, among others:
online libraries included with plotter software, all you have to do is buy a subscription (e.g. Silhouette Studio, Cricut Design Space),
SVG file stores (Design Bundles, Creative Market, Etsy),
free libraries - e.g. Freepik, Pixabay, LoveSVG,
you can also create your own patterns in programs such as Adobe Illustrator, Inkscape or Canva. (in the case of Silhouette plotters, to import SVG files, you need to buy a software extension to the Designer Edition)
Note: when using ready-made commercial patterns, it is worth checking the license terms!
Plotter software also allows you to use simple tools to design your own shapes, text and patterns.

Example implementation
Plotters can be used to make 3D decorations, among other things, which you can easily match both thematically and in terms of color to a given celebration. An example of this type of project is a decorative model of a lemonade stand, which you can use as a decoration for a summer party or an eye-catching element of a shop window!
1. Simply cut out the individual design elements using any cutter, such as a Cricut Maker or Cameo. You can make the fold lines using a scoring tool, or in the case of Silhouette cutters, using a dashed line.
2. If you want to make a multi-colored model, just cut out the individual elements from paper with different patterns and colors. Using scrapbook paper or with your own print will additionally diversify the project. In the case of our lemonade stand, we will use colored papers to create a roof.
3. Now all you need to do is bend the cut out elements along the fold line, i.e. creased or broken - both methods allow you to achieve an aesthetic effect. Then all you need to do is glue the individual parts together to obtain a decorative roof.
4. Time for the base – you can use brown paper or eco paper to get a natural effect. I will use patterned paper, which will additionally diversify the whole thing.
5. I fold the elements again along the scoring or dashed lines, and then glue them in the appropriate places.
6. Time to connect our model into a whole, to connect the paper elements you can use a paper stick, double-sided tape or bookbinding glue to achieve lasting effects.
7. Our miniature lemonade stand is ready! It can now decorate the drinks table at a birthday party or serve as a decorative model on the counter of a shop!
Summary
Cutting out paper decorations using cutting plotters is an incredibly creative, effective and practical form of handicraft. Thanks to the wide possibilities of the devices, the wealth of available materials and patterns, everyone can create unique, personalized decorations for any occasion.
